Freelancing: a Key to a Work Life Balance

Updated: Feb 29, 2020

Everyone has dreams in life, may it be career, family, travel, or other personal goals. But we cannot seem to work it out or get them all at once. That's when our priorities differ. I, for one, prioritized my family over career. I used to work in the corporate world but when I married and got pregnant, I knew it would be difficult to balance work and family. (Kudos to those who can!) So, I decided to focus on my family first. Now, I hope to work again. It got me thinking, can I still work without having to sacrifice time for my family? How? Searching for answers, I learned about freelancing from friends, how they managed to work and take care of their families at the same time. I thought, I can do it too. So as a start, I enrolled in a freelance course from FVA online academy, a reputable freelancing institute. I am hopeful that freelancing will be the key to a work life balance I aim for.

What is freelancing?

According to Wikipedia, freelancing means working independently or working as self-employed and not necessarily committed to a particular employer long term. Fields, professions, and industries where freelancing is predominant include: music, writing, acting, computer programming, web design, graphic design, translating and illustrating, film and video production and other forms of piece work. In this age of the internet, most freelancing jobs are done online. Freelancing offers a lot of benefits that make you achieve a work life balance, which we hardly get from working otherwise.

Here are just a few:

Flexible Work Schedule

Since you call the shots with freelancing, you get to manage your own time. Sounds cool, right? You can always schedule when to work, thus, you can still attend to your family's and personal needs. There'll be more quality time for your family and yourself. But of course, this benefit comes with working responsibly. Although you have a flexible work schedule, you still need to finish work on time to meet the deadline set by clients. It's just a matter of proper time management.

You Do What You Love

Freelancing gives you the freedom to choose what you want to work on. You can always pursue your passion. There are varieties of freelancing jobs out there you can choose from (as mentioned above). It's just up to you which do you think you love doing best. But in any case, you want to try another work, you always have the chance to do so. That's the good thing about freelancing, the opportunities are limitless. You get to decide what you want to pursue and make you happy. You'll be able to master your craft too. This in turn leads to self-fulfillment.

Greater Earning Potential

Another good thing about freelancing is that you get to earn more as you build your expertise. You don't only get to do what you love, but you also get well-compensated as long as you do your work well, of course. With this greater earning potential, you can build or buy the things you need and dream of. That's why a lot of people are going to this direction - working as a freelancer.

No Hassle Commuting to Work

Commuting to work is becoming stressful due to heavy traffic especially if you're far from your workplace. But since freelancing means working at the comfort of your home, you don't need to worry about travelling to work anymore. You even save a lot of time, money and effort just by getting to work alone. Not to mention, the stress you can avoid from commuting. It's really very convenient to work at home.

Better Work Relationships

When you have established a freelancing career, clients will be more likely to come looking for you. And this is a great advantage. You have the freedom to decide who to work with by choosing your client. Thus, you can build good rapport and work relationships when you're comfortable working with them. This is a key to a nice working environment which translates to better outputs, which are good for both you and your clients.

Better Health and Well Being

And all these benefits about freelancing boils down to promoting better health and well-being. Freelancing lets you do a lot of stuff to be healthy and feel contented. Since you'll be able to have more time and earn big, you get to pamper yourself. Have enough sleep and rest, go on a getaway, indulge on your favorite food, or do anything that makes you happy.

Promotes Client Satisfaction

Not only does freelancing help freelancers but also helps entrepreneurs with their businesses. The freelance services provided make client's workloads or daily tasks easier, which means lesser stress, so you could focus on high-level tasks when it comes to running your businesses. It also cut the operational expenses compared to hiring an employee. With freelancing, it helps businesses to grow. This results to client satisfaction.

These are just a few benefits freelancing could offer - for a work life balance for freelancers and clients too. If you want to take advantage of these benefits, you can also do freelancing or avail of freelance services to lighten up the load. Experience firsthand what freelancing could give.
